The Importance and Significance of Pearls in Ancient Civilization

Abstract
Pearl is a circular object formed by organic matter secreted by shellfish organisms, with a beautiful appearance and unique luster. Since ancient times, pearls have been regarded as a precious treasure, widely used in the production of jewelry and decorations. According to research from geology and archaeology, pearls existed on Earth two hundred million years ago. Pearl played a very unique role in ancient social life, playing an important role in the development of ancient civilization in terms of economy, art, worship, legends, and symbols, and possessing profound social, cultural, and religious significance. This review discusses the development process of pearls in ancient Western civilization and ancient Eastern civilization, explores their importance and significance in the development of ancient civilization, and combines the current situation of modern society to prospect the value and application of pearls in modern society, providing a basis for better development and protection of pearls.
