Research interest: Population genetics and fisheries biology of marine organisms have been the major research focus in my lab. One of the major accomplishments is to develop molecular markers for marine shrimps and to address phylogenetic and population genetic questions. Population (or stock) discrimination by using morphological characters was also conducted, and species analyzed included marine shrimps and fish. Permutation test with discriminating ratio was developed and utilized in our papers. Stock assessment for albacore in the Atlantic ocean using ASPM have been executing recently.  

 

Desislava Rozdina

Research interest:  The major fields of my scientific research are fish ecology and ichthyology, mainly temp of growth, reproduction, population structure, fish conservation and etc. I also work in the field of aquatic- and ichthyotoxicology, and fish diseases in aquaculture. My latest work has been focused on studying basic population-biology parameters, temp of growth and heavy metals accumulation in Alosa immaculata fromDanubeRiver.

 

Ma. Eugenia Vega-Cendejas

PhD, Center for Research and Advanced Studies of National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Mexico

Research interest: Dra Vega-Cendejas studies on taxonomy and ecology of estuarine and freshwater fish communities. Also she has evaluated fish communities on impacted ecosystems and studied trophodynamics and energy fluxes in coastal ecosystems considering fish associations (structure) and the use of the ecosystem (function). She has contributed to Mexican ichthyological diversity and carried our explorations and taxonomic evaluations in protected areas (natural reserves). Recently She has integrated genetic and morphometric analysis for the fish taxonomy and ecological studies.

 

Okan Akyol

Professor Dr., Faculty of Fisheries, Ege University, Dep. of Fish Capture Technology and Fish Processing, Izmir, Turkey

Research Interest: Fisheries biology and population dynamics of marine species, fishing technology, zoogeographic distribution of marine species, interactions between fisheries and aquaculture. He has 20 years academic experience and so far, ha has 120 papers in national and international journals.

 

Zarrien Ayub

PhD, Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology, University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan

Research interest: Shellfish biology and aquaculture. Dr. Zarrien Ayub did her M. Phil. and Ph. D. in Marine Biology from the Centre, University of Karachi, Pakistan. Her Ph. D. work was based on the reproductive biology of penaeid shrimps. She did her postdoctoral study on  Development of biosecure, sustainable and cost-effective nursery and grow-out technology for the penaeid shrimps  from Texas A & M, University System, USA. She was nominated as one of the trainee in a three year CLIMA project 2006-2009 on Euro-Asian Research and Training in Climate Change Management.

 

Renato M. Honji

PhD, Laboratory of Metabolism and Reproduction of Aquatic Organism, Physiology Department, Institute of Biosciences, University of S o Paulo (IB-USP), Brazil

Research interest: Comparative physiology, especially on reproductive physiology and metabolism applied in aquaculture. Within this context, emphasizing those aspects: brain-pituitary-gonad axis; sex determination and differentiation; gametogenesis; energy metabolism; conservation physiology of endangered species; fish behavior; broodstock management and hormonal manipulations in fish reproduction; ecotoxicology and molecular biology.

 

Tamer El-Sayed Aly

Research interest: 1) Producing of Nile tilapia in marine water by genetic engineering, in intensive system; 2) Rearing of Cat fish in different water salinities in close water systems; 3) Alternative protein sources (such as sea weeds and algae) for Nile Tilapia; 4) Design of a zero-discharge tilapia recirculating system.

 

Nashat A. Hamidan

Conservation specialist, The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, Jordan

Research interest: Part of his work is focusing on the freshwater fish conservation and restoration. He established the Conservation project for the Azraq killifish Aphanius sirhani, and he was involved in many fish surveys and conservation project especially focusing on the endemics and critically endangered. His published work focused on the status of Jordanian freshwater fish, their conservation, and adaptation strategies in the context of harsh desert environmental conditions. He established some Ichthyofaunal surveys in United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.

 

Swapnaja A. Mohite

Professor, Dept. Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India

Research interest: Fisheries management with doctorate in aquaculture. Dr. Mohite has worked on the biology of molluscs, especially clams. So far she has published about 48 papers in national and international journals and 4 books by international publisher. Currently she is working on a project entitled "Inventory and bio-prospecting of marine invertebrates of Maharashtra (India) with special emphasis on sponges and associated micro-organisms". She is in this field for last 20 years.

L. Prabhadevi

Research interest: She has been engaged in teaching and research in Aquatic science, Aquaculture, Fisheries and Fish processing technology for the past 25 years. Her first degree was in Zoology and post-graduation in Marine biology. She has been focusing on integrated fish farming especially rice and fish co-culture and formulating fish feeds by utilizing agricultural by-products and other aquatic vegetation. Her studies also include the hydrobiology of lakes and rivers of Ethiopia which are least explored as well as extending support to farmers to establish fish ponds and fish hatcheries.

Nevine M. Abou Shabana

Research interest: Fish reproduction (Mediterranean species, economic fresh water fish and ornamental Red sea fish). Assessment of gonadal maturation stages in reference to steroid hormones of different fish species and their seasonal variation profiles, histological and ultrastructure composition of male and female gonads in terms of environmental disturbances according to discharge of human and industrial wastes discharge in urban areas. Application of new technologies to enhance hatchery production of fry and fingerlings of domesticated economic fish species for aquaculture industry.

Research interest: She is exploring the potential of several species of seaweeds in biomedical research. Among the cores of her expertise, she is interested in pursuing further research on seaweed natural habitats in order to facilitate the growing demands of commercial usage while retaining and preserving the natural stocks for the protection of the ecosystems that involves. Currently she is interested to participate in the project more related to sustainable development to support to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially on “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDGs 11) and “Life below water” (SDG14).

Research interest: The researches are mainly on the marine mollusk taxonomy and ecology such as species distribution, density in all habitats, mollusk reproductive cycle and coral reef ecology. The alien and invasive species are the recent interest.

 

Ruth Garcia Gomez

PhD on aquatic animal health, BsC in veterinary science, MsC on international cooperation for development; Aquatic Biosecurity Specialist under the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Division of the Pacific Community (SPC), Spain

Research interest: Most of her professional career has been focused on aquatic animal health, aquatic biosecurity, general aquaculture and management/development and conservation of aquatic genetic resources of relevance for aquaculture. Her current research areas are focused on better aquaculture management practises, aquatic animal health management, aquatic biosecurity and risk analysis. She has been involved in the improvement of aquatic biosecurity strategies and protocols in a broad range of countries around the world, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, etc. and involving a wide range of stakeholders.

Research interest: Prof. Das is interested in Research on nutrient dynamics of aquaculture systems and in-situ remediation of aquaculture waste through application of different types of bio-floc techniques. He is also engaged in low cost feed formulations and minimizing stress arising out of metabolite loading in the system. He has been in research areas encompassing water and soil quality monitoring and biogeochemical nutrient cycling in closed system aquaculture of fish and shellfishes.
