Research interests: Sea turtles, sharks and other large pelagic animals. My field of research has involved population dynamics and applied ecology for marine ecosystem conservation and fisheries management. I have focused my research on the study of the reproductive biology, ecological role and connectivity of highly migratory organisms by the use of mark and recapture, stable isotopes, genetics and satellite telemetry, among others. I have done extensive research on sea turtles from the Galapagos Islands and currently undertaking a satellite telemetry shark tagging project on pelagic sharks in Chilean waters. I currently hold a position as Researcher in the Fisheries Research Division at the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), Chile.

 

Aisha Ahmed Belal, Associate Professor of Marine Invertebrates, National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Suez, Egypt

Research interests: Hydrobiology (Benthic Invertebrates ). Monitoring of benthic invertebrates in the bordered line of Egypt; Red Sea , Suez Gulf , Suez Canal and some of the surrounding habitats, in relation to the physico-chemical characteristics of the water. The activity including the sampling, identification, taxonomy and counting of the different species of benthic invertebrates , especially Taxonomy and Ecology of Polychaetes (Annelida: Polychaeta) from 1996 up till now. As well as the isolation & purification of some dominant species for bioassay studies.

Research interests: Has experience on Coastal Ecology, developing studies on: coastal regions and continental shelf/slope, and marine habitats with macrobenthic assemblages of fauna and flora. Has also experience on the evaluation socioeconomic and monitoring of anthropogenic impacts in the coastal zone; on the evaluation of local and global climate changes concerning reef habitats as the relationship between the fauna and flora and the environmental variables. Another waterbird ecology project implemented by him at the internationally important Chilika Lake (Orissa) has documented the nutritive value of guano deposited by waterbirds and the beneficial role played by them for the fishermen.

He had taken part in the project of systematics, distribution, zoogeography, molecular investigation and conservation of the Red Sea fishes.
